Little Dresses for Africa has delivered more than 2.5 million dresses to Africa and other places throughout the world since the organization was started in 2008, according to information on its website.
The dresses, distributed through orphanages, churches and schools, are just part of the mission, though; equally important is that the dresses help bring hope to the recipients and give them a sense of self-worth, according to the site.
On the night of Oct. 2, a Little Dresses for Africa class was held at Souderton Area High School as part of the Souderton Area Community Education program.
“It was just a really nice reach out into the world program,” Cindy Crouthamel, who led the class, said.
Each of the 13 people in the class made a dress that night, she said, but those won’t be the only ones.
“Several of them said they were going to go home and do more,” she said.
Even novice seamstresses can turn a pillowcase into one of the dresses, Little Dresses for Africa said while answering the question of why it suggests using pillowcases.
“Pillowcases are available in so many colors and patterns. They already have the hem and sides in them and are often sitting unused on shelves in closets all across the country. With just a little help they can be turned into bright little sundresses, perfectly suited for the African climate,” says.
“The directions come that you can make them out of a pillowcase or about three-quarter yard of fabric,” Crouthamel said.
About half those in the class used pillowcases and half fabric, she said
