Cassie McLelland has been dressing her son's wheelchair in clever Halloween costumes
For the past six years, Cassie McLelland has been dressing her son's wheelchair in clever Halloween costumes, like Batman and his Batmobile or Superman flying through the clouds. She wants everyone to know that even though 9-year-old Caleb's spina bifida limits his mobility, it's just a small part of his and his family's story.

October is National Spina Bifida Awareness Month, and in the hopes of giving everyone a glimpse into the life of a family raising a child with the birth defect, Cassie McLelland spoke with The Huffington Post about the challenges they face.
"My goal this month (and all the time really) is to show people what SB looks like. It looks like Caleb," McLelland said via email. "It looks like the countless other kids and adults living full lives every day."
"I think people assume that our lives are hard all the time," she added. "I think people assume that our lives are somehow abnormal compared to everyone else. I think people assume that our lives revolve around Caleb and Spina Bifida, that SB consumes our lives. It doesn't. Spina Bifida is part of our life, but it isn't our life."
McLelland said she was 18 weeks pregnant when doctors told her her son had spina bifida and would have "no real quality of life." But, she says, the opposite happened.
"The picture painted for us that day was grim and terrifying," she wrote to HuffPost. "Our faith gave us hope even when the doctors did not. If I had just known how amazing Caleb would be, I wouldn't have been so scared. That's the message I would want to share with anyone facing this same situation."
She started dressing up Caleb's wheelchair for Halloween when he was just 3 years old. As he got older, he started collaborating with her on costume ideas.
"I know they look elaborate but honestly my only tools are a hot glue gun and some cardboard. Anyone can do it and many do. I see more and more wheelchair costumes every single year. It's wonderful," she told HuffPost.
She also said that by raising Caleb she's learned that she's capable of more than she ever thought possible.
"I've witnessed my child overcome some pretty big obstacles, and always with a smile. I get to be a part of his milestones, his achievements, his victories. That's a beautiful thing that I am so thankful to be a part of," she said.
Her main hope is that others can look past Caleb's wheels and see him for the fun-loving boy he truly is.
"I want people to see Caleb, not just the wheelchair or the leg braces, but Caleb. He is very much a 9-year-old boy in and out. He is active, smart, funny, and terribly handsome," she said. "I want people to know that Caleb is so much more than his diagnoses. I want people to see that a wheelchair is not something that he is 'bound' to or 'confined' to, it's his freedom. Mobility is a beautiful thing. That boy is living life and I'm just along for the ride. And it's been a pretty good ride so far."

But if you’d rather be scared out of your socks, nobody dials up fright better than Universal.
“Halloween Horror Nights at the two Universal theme parks – in Orlando and Hollywood, Calif. – have evolved into the two biggest Halloween events at theme parks in the country,” Levine said. The event kicked off in both parks last weekend and runs into early November.
“While most seasonal theme parks offer generically themed haunted houses, the Universal events are elaborate affairs with an extremely high production value,” Levine said. “They use highly recognized brand-name themes such as the ‘Halloween’ movie franchise and ‘The Walking Dead,’ and the experience is almost like stepping right inside one of these movies or TV shows.”
“‘Immersive’ doesn’t begin to describe it,” Levine continued. “You become a character in a horror movie. When you descend into the world of ‘The Walking Dead,’ you are surrounded by walkers lurking in every corner. They definitely delight in scaring the daylights out of you, and they’re really very good at it.”
Halloween Horror Nights will feature new haunted houses this year, including one based on “Dracula Untold,” the upcoming Universal film.
“What’s wonderful about Universal is that they have a legitimate claim to Halloween,” Levine said.

“It’s obvious that they’re spending a lot of money on this, which also makes it obvious that they’re making a lot of money on this,” Levine said. “The event in Orlando will often sell out on weekends, and we’re talking about a huge, huge park. Fall is now a blockbuster season.”
But boo-ers beware. “Just as parents might exercise caution with a movie that’s rated PG-13, they should do the same thing with the scarier Halloween events at larger theme parks,” Levine said.
“These events tend to take place at night, and there’s lots of blood, gore and screaming. Some of the shows at larger parks also have some racy dialogue and suggestive costuming. It’s not intended for impressionable younger kids, and it can feel very un-theme-parky.”

That elastic band will put undue stress on your hair shaft and roots,” says Mary Rascon, Creative Director and Owner of Cambio Salon and Spa.
Apply an overnight treatment
“An overnight treatment can sometimes be the best medicine for overly-dry or broken ends,” says stylist and makeup artist Mia Silverio of Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa. Place a small bottle of lemongrass oil in a cup of hot water to let the oil become more fluid, then apply the oil to your ends and put your hair in a high bun or a braid. Wrap your hair in a silk scarf or gentle fabric to keep the oil off your pillow covers, and let the treatment do its magic while you sleep. The very next morning, don’t get your hair wet or shower! Instead, take your shampoo and apply it directly to your oily hair. Afterwards, start the shower and continue as you would with your daily routine.

Twist your hair around itself into a top knot at the top of the head and use a fabric scrunchie to secure. The scrunchie is best because it is gentle on the hair and the elastic is covered. When you unravel it in the morning you will have preserved or created waves, says Mia Moore of Pierre Michel salon

Most underwear is just $40, and while that's a little more than we'd like to spend on everyday underthings, the original prices (for underwear alone!) range from $95-$500.
The lingerie here is the epitome of boudoir-chic, and it's all beautiful. However, the sizing is best suited for smaller figures: though bras range from 32A-36D, most of the ones we found were soft-cup styles that offer little support. Underwear, loungewear, and ready to wear range in size from extra small to extra large, but looked to run small. If you're looking for larger sizes or lower prices, we'd say skip this sale and go to the Natori sample sale, where most prices cap off at $30 (as opposed to $300 here).
About half of the sale is made up of standard undergarments, like bras and panties. As we mentioned above, many of the bras we found are soft-cup styles: we spotted lace demi bras, satin triangle bras, and sheer balconette bras, all for $50. The padded bras are limited, but include lace-lined full-coverage styles for $70 and satin demi bras with lace-up corset-style backs for $40.
A small rack in the front of the sale space holds specially-priced items; bras on this rack (again, mostly soft cup) are marked $30-$40.
We found underwear in every cut, including satin boyshorts, lace briefs, and silk high-waisted styles for $40. There's also a table of ruffled chiffon briefs and satin thongs, that are $25 each. We also found some decidedly sexier special-occasion pieces, including leather string bikini-cut underwear and caged styles (which you can see in the gallery) for $40 each.
Aside from that, the sale offers an impressive selection of vintage-inspired lingerie, such as silk garterbelts ($40), satin corsets ($85), and bra-top slips for $140. The sizing for these range between extra small and large, with a good distribution in each size range.
There's a small selection of ready-to-wear clothing among the lingerie, including bodycon skirts for $125 and chiffon evening gowns for $300. These are grouped with high-end loungewear, like floor-length satin robes ($200) and lace-trimmed rompers for $125.
Oddly enough, our favorite part of this sale was the selection of casual brushed-cotton loungewear, which are toward the back. Expect to find soft, oversized tees for $50, tie-waist shorts for $60, and cropped muscle tanks for $30, There is also a rack of leggings, which range in price from $50-$125 (the pricier ones are super-soft cashmere).
The bottom line: the discounts are unbelievably good, relatively speaking, but because the original prices are so high, you'll still be paying a premium—and mostly for things that aren't fit for everyday. There's a communal fitting room, and the staff notified us that they'll be restocking what they can, but there will likely be no further discounts. always point to something and say 'what if.'"

While reviewing the file, the detective, who usually searches archives for loose ends, found one -- four rolls of film taken at Cobain's house that had never
been developed.
Twenty years ago, police found no reason process them, since they had Polaroid snaps of the place where Cobain perished.
Police had the 35 mm film developed, but the images are not new evidence. They just want to make them accessible to the public.
Fear of stoking conspiracy theories kept them from doing it earlier, Ciesenski said.
"Sometimes people believe what they read—some of the disinformation from some of the books, that this was a conspiracy. That's completely inaccurate," he
said. "It's a suicide. This is a closed case."
Many music legends died at the same young age of 27. They include Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Hospital in Boston.
The study will be the first large test of cocoa flavanols, which in previous smaller studies improved blood pressure, cholesterol, the body’s use of
insulin, artery health and other heart-related factors.
A second part of the study will test multivitamins to help prevent cancer. Earlier research suggested this benefit but involved just older, unusually healthy
men. Researchers want to see if multivitamins lower cancer risk in a broader population.
The study will be sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and Mars Inc., maker of M&M’s and Snickers bars. The candy company has patented
a way to extract flavanols from cocoa in high concentration and put them in capsules. Mars and some other companies sell cocoa extract capsules, but with
less active ingredient than those that will be tested in the study; candy contains even less.
‘‘You’re not going to get these protective flavanols in most of the candy on the market. Cocoa flavanols are often destroyed by the processing,’’ said
Manson, who will lead the study with Howard Sesso at Brigham and others at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Participants will get dummy pills or two capsules a day of cocoa flavanols for four years, and neither they nor the study leaders will know who is taking
what during the study. The flavanol capsules are coated and have no taste, said Manson, who tried them herself.
In the other part of the study, participants will get dummy pills or daily multivitamins containing a broad range of nutrients.
Participants will be recruited from existing studies, which saves money and lets the study proceed much more quickly, Manson said, although some additional
people with a strong interest in the research may be allowed to enroll. The women will come from the Women’s Health Initiative study, the long-running
research project best known for showing that menopause hormone pills might raise heart risks rather than lower them as had long been thought. Men will be
recruited from other large studies.
Manson also is leading a government-funded study testing vitamin D pills in 26,000 men and women. Results are expected in three years.
